Course 01 · Foundation
Building SFOT Into Your Practice
This course is designed for clinicians looking to understand when and how to diagnose and treatment-plan SFOT into patient care.
Friday, January 8, 2027 · 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. · PMSS Education Center, Glenview, Illinois · $2,950
Course Overview
This course is designed for clinicians looking to understand when and how to diagnose and treatment-plan SFOT into patient care.
The Primer is the recommended first step before enrolling in SFOT + MARPE (Course 02) or SFOT: The Technique (Course 03).
Course Objectives
Learn the conditions and indications when SFOT needs to be a part of the treatment-planning discussion to optimize patient care.
Diagnose and identify key risk-assessment considerations that require periodontal phenotype modification — the gingival phenotype and / or the bone morphotype.
Diagnose and plan SFOT into challenging restorative / prosthodontic cases — such as the worn dentition where space is lost due to wear and compensatory eruption patterns.
CBCT-based condylar position. Class I / II / III decompensation impact on the dentoalveolar bone complex. Coordinating SFOT with MARPE. Airway-focused treatment planning. Implant planning in airway-driven and edentulous cases.
Who This Is For
The Primer is built for the clinician who recognizes the SFOT-eligible patient, sits in the interdisciplinary planning conversation, or wants to know whether their next case is a candidate before it escalates.
For orthodontists · periodontists · interdisciplinary & airway-focused dentists · oral & maxillofacial surgeons · prosthodontists · restorative dentists · general dentists.
Course Agenda
The day moves through the four content areas of the brochure: indications, phenotype modification, restorative considerations, and the orthodontic / orthopaedic / airway block. Module ordering and timing are subject to George's final shape.
Learn the conditions and indications when SFOT needs to be a part of the treatment-planning discussion to optimize patient care.
Diagnose and identify key risk-assessment considerations that require periodontal phenotype modification — the gingival phenotype and / or the bone morphotype.
How to diagnose and plan SFOT into challenging restorative / prosthodontic cases such as the worn dentition where space is lost due to wear and compensatory eruption patterns.
Understanding CBCT-based condylar position and how to determine the true mandibular positioning relative to the maxilla for case planning.
The impact of decompensation strategies on the dentoalveolar bone complex for Class I, II, and III patients — and when periodontal phenotype modification needs to be implemented.
Plan and coordinate SFOT with non-surgical skeletal expansion therapy (i.e. MARPE).
Where and how to begin airway assessment in the SFOT context.
Course Director
The Primer is taught by the periodontist who wrote the textbook on SFOT, distilling two decades of clinical experience into a single foundational day.
Dr. Mandelaris attended the University of Michigan from undergraduate through dental school. He completed a post-graduate residency at the University of Louisville, School of Dentistry, where he obtained a certificate in Periodontology and a Master of Science in Oral Biology. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and a Fellow of the American and International Colleges of Dentists, the Academy of Osseointegration, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.
He has published more than 40 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and authored fourteen chapters in ten textbooks used worldwide on computer-guided implantology, CT/CBCT diagnostics, and SFOT. In 2023, he authored and edited Surgically Facilitated Orthodontic Therapy: An Interdisciplinary Approach (Springer), one of the first textbooks of its kind in the profession.
Two-time recipient of the AAP Clinical Research Award (2017 & 2021). 2018 recipient of the Saul Schluger Memorial Award for Clinical Excellence in Diagnosis and Treatment Planning. Currently serves on the AAP Board of Trustees and is Past President of the Illinois Society of Periodontists. Private practice at Periodontal Medicine & Surgical Specialists in Glenview and Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois.
